The worst thing about being stuck in a rut is that you may not even recognize that you are actually stuck in a rut. This is because the only person who can recognize and truly help you in such a situation is yourself.
Before we talk about the measures you can take to get out of a rut, it is important to understand why you may be stuck in it and how you can recognize it.
Do you feel dissatisfied with your life? Do you find it difficult to get out of bed every morning?
Do you feel so comfortable in your routine that you never change anything?
If the answer to even two of these questions is yes, there is a high chance that this blog will help you.
The issue with being stuck in a rut is that you never truly comprehend it. You may blame your sleep schedule or lack of exciting events in life for losing interest in life altogether but you may never question your strict routine for what you are going through. Another misconception people have is that only those who have a productive yet stressful routine tend to get stuck in a rut. The truth is that even if you only take one class every day or work part-time and spend most of your day sleeping, you are still someone who is stuck in a rut and needs to get out of it.
Why?
I remember that whenever we would have our annual party in school, I found it extremely difficult to fall asleep the night before yet I would wake up all enthusiastic the next morning because I was looking forward to the day. That morning, I would be happy waking up way earlier than usual and wouldn't mind dressing up at 7 am in the morning and going to school. This was because I wanted to live the day to the fullest and not waste a minute of it.
While it is almost impossible to recreate that happiness and enthusiasm in daily life, one thing which can definitely be done is that every night you give yourself a reason to wake up for the next day. But mind you, this reason should not be the same every single day. It should not just be work or meeting the same friend in school because these things will eventually stop motivating you to wake up every day. To get out of your steady but monotonous routine, you need to take one extra step and come up with something that will make each day unique and interesting.
Here are a few things you can try:
Find a unique hobby: Something you do not want to excel at but simply want to do for pleasure
Do something for yourself: This does not mean grabbing a chocolate bar every Wednesday (even though that can be done but the diabetic consequences are not upon me then) but rather, going for a walk in nature or trying a new form of yoga
Alter your perspective: Instead of looking at your job as something that you do to get your salary at the end of the month, treat it as a way of challenging your brain and using it to create something new and contribute to the world
Stay in tune with your emotions: I know this sounds very cliche, but you need to recognize your emotions and be fully mindful of them to lead a happy life. Know when you feel stressed or sad or anxious and ask yourself why. Respect how you feel and show yourself mercy as you would to a friend.
The first step is always the intention and this applies to most things in life. You do not have to make unreasonably large changes in your life or completely change its course of action but one thing that you can do is make sure that you are not leading a robotic life. You are not constantly waiting for weekends or vacations or even a certain event in your life to feel better again.
Each day is an opportunity and you deserve to make the most out of it!
